Being a Stay at home mom can be a drag. The day in and day out responsibilities can be boring. And that can make US boring! We stop doing fun things. Instead, we start doing mom hobbies.
Before we were married and had kids we liked to do stuff. But even a brand new mom probably has a hard time remembering what that stuff was. Being a mom is all-consuming. Plus, we are wives. And homemakers. It’s easy to lose ourselves.
What are mom hobbies?
So now we do things like dancing while we vacuum. We consider binge-watching The Killing on Netflix while we fold laundry the highlight of our day. We might even fancy ourselves wine connoisseurs when our wine has a cork instead of a screw-cap. These aren’t what “regular” people consider hobbies. They are mom hobbies.
Mom hobbies include blending up our hours-old cold coffee with ice cubes and calling it intentional. Or spending hours scrolling through Pinterest saying “I could TOTALLY make that!” then never actually making it. These are not the things we talk about when we get together with other people. It would bore them to sleep.
How To STOP BEING BORING!
I propose taking up REAL hobbies! There are so many benefits to finding a hobby you truly enjoy. You’ll stress less, have more chances for socializing, and even become more interesting.
Having a hobby has been linked to lower overall stress. Of course, this makes total sense. Spending time doing something you enjoy is going to make you happier. Having an outlet for creative energy will allow you to get into a zone that is almost like meditation.
Even if you start a new solo hobby, it can give you a good excuse to get social. If you begin scrapbooking, you might find meetups or classes at your local Michael’s or other craft stores. There are quilting groups in many communities. You can even take classes at a community college if the finances line up. Even though these all seem like homebody hobbies, they can easily get you out of the house.
And even if you DON’T get out of the house, there are online communities for, well, everything. You can find a whole new group of friends by joining a Facebook group focused on whatever you’re doing. There are groups for painting, sewing, making vinyl decals, and even decorating your planner!
You know how I reminded you that moms are boring? Well, we aren’t, really. But when all we ever do is take care of our families, we don’t have much else to talk about. What was the last book I read? Oh, ummm, does Goodnight Moon count?
Getting involved with a new hobby can change that. When we are doing something new, we have something new to talk about! Are you taking a cooking class? Awesome. Now you can talk about recipes and new things you’ve learned. Are you learning to knit? You can ask your knitting friends about hand cramps!
It’s time to ditch the mom hobbies. It can be hard starting a new hobby, though. I’ve created a worksheet to help you pinpoint your ideal hobby!
Once you have an idea of what you want to do, head over to my Amazon Idea Lists to check out some “starter kits” I’ve put together. I want to make things as easy for you as possible! I included my favorite hobbies, knitting, crochet, happy planner-ing, and beer brewing!
