What do you do when your vacation is less than a month away? You smile in happy anticipation. What do you do when that vacation happens to be a week at Disney World? You jump up and down in your seat with glee. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU GET TO TELL YOUR KIDS WE’RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD?! You Google/Pinterest the hell out of cute little surprise ideas like puzzles and scavenger hunts and the like to tell them!
We’ve been planning this Disney trip for months. Even Hubbs, who is unimpressed at even the MOST exciting things, is excited. We’ve known the whole time, though, that telling the kids too early would be a disaster.
So we told them a little fib. We told them we were going to visit some cousins in Florida. We went last year and they had so much fun! Their cousins have a pool, you know. So they know we’re flying on a plane (YAY, they both prefer flying over driving. Don’t we all?) and that we’re going to Florida.
But we’ve been dropping hints and talking a lot about Disney World. We’ve said things like “Wow, remember when we went to the Magic Kingdom for a day last year? I wish we could go back someday” or “That new world of avatar looks so cool. Too bad we can’t go see it this summer.”
Making them really wish they could go, but not indicating that we’re going at all.
Now it’s time to tell them…
We’re Going to Disney World
Disney has these cool RF bracelets called MagicBands. If you’re staying at a Disney Resort at Disney World, Disney will send them to you for free, as part of your package. These bracelets are your room key, theme park ticket, Memory Maker picture tag, and can even be used to make purchases if you’ve set it up!
SO, we got those in the mail about 4 weeks before our trip. Then, I ordered some Disney Park maps from Ebay for a couple bucks. Disney used to mail these out for you, but they’ve changed over to interactive maps, so you can only get them in person at the park, or order them from someone who has been to the park.
Next, I typed up a letter “from” Mickey and Minnie Mouse to tell the kids our big surprise. We are telling them that we’re going because they did really well in school this year, which is totally true. This kinda links the awesome thing with something they did well.
The Big Reveal
Well, to be truthful it was super anticlimactic. I packaged everything up, gathered the Bigs and told The Boy to read the letter. He is a great reader, well above grade level and generally has a really good comprehension of what he reads. BUT, it was just before bedtime. And he wanted to eat the popsicle he had just grabbed from the freezer.
So The Boy thought we were just talking about how we went to Magic Kingdom last year. When we explained it, he was happy, but overwhelmed at having to wait a couple weeks to leave. The Girl was afraid of leaving her favorite lovey behind, either at home or at the hotel.
SO, we’re going to be working on some other things to get the excitement up over the next couple of weeks. But for me, well, I’m still jumping up and down in my seat because WE’RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD! AHHH!
